We know very little about the origins of the Shih Tzu. It’s possibly originated in Tibet. One of the smallest Tibetan breeds, it has a thick coat and a long tail. The Shih Tzu served as loyal guardians and watchdogs in monasteries. They were surrounded by a lot of myths. According to one belief, they were the embodiments of mischievous household gods and contained the souls of lamas still seeking nirvana.

The lamas offered the dogs to the Chinese emperors as a gift, and it was there they received their name, Shih Tzu, which means “little lion” or “lion dog.”
